Cloud Lab-12: How to Install ESXi Server- ”Basic Configuration” (Part 2)

Just for quick recall, In Previous Lab “Part 1- “ESXi Installation“”  we have installed our first ESXi Host of cloud. Today, i am going to show you how to configure some of the basic settings of ESXi Server.

LAB-12 TASKS (Part 2)

In this Lab we will perform following tasks.

  1. Our Perquisite Configuration for First ESXi Server
  2. First ESXi Server Basic Configurations
    • How to setup IP/DNS/Name settings
    • How to enable SSH/ESXi
  3. Install other Resource Group Servers (2-8)
  4. Other useful information for ESXi Server (optional)
    • How to restore Network settings of ESXi
    • How to Set/change Root password

1-Our Perquisite Configuration for First ESXi Server

Following are the configuration setting of Resource Group ESXi-1 Server. Which you need to know and will configure in Next section of this lab

  • Set system name (
  • Configure an IP address (
  • DNS Server IP Address (
  • Enable “SSH”
  • Configure forward and Reverse DNS Entry for  

2-First ESXi Server Basic Configurations

Configure following basic configuration for ESXi Server.

  1. How to setup IP/DNS/Name settings.
  2. How to enable SSH/ESXi.

How to setup IP/DNS/Name settings

If you are on main screen as showed above and want to do some basic ESXi Setting. Then Press <F2> Customize System/View Logs Setting and supply your “root” credentials, press “OK” 


Press “F2” again. Configure Management Network


Select “IP Configuration” (for IPV4).press “Enter”


Use arrow key to move up/down, Select static and provide IP/Subnet/Gateway setting. Press “Enter”.


To configure DNS, Select “DNS Configuration” and press “Enter”.


Provide your Primary/Secondary DNS and hostname. Please “Enter”  


Now press “ESC” to move to the previous screen. You want to test your network connectivity on the base of above IP Configuration. Select “Test Management Network”, Press “Enter”.


It will ping the default gateway, if you want to check some other IP’s then put in Ping Address #1 and 2.Press “Enter” and verify the result OK/Fail.


How to enable SSH/ESXi Shell Support.

On Main Configuration Screen, select “Troubleshooting Options”, press “Enter”


If you want to enable either ESXi Shell/SSH options, select the required one and press “Enter”


3-Install other Resource Group Servers (2-8)

Repeat the same steps which we performed in  “Part 1- ESXi Installation” and so far in Part 2 for installation and configuration of other resource group servers. Following are the information which you need to know for configuration.

System Name/DNS Name IP Address DNS Name Configure DNS (Y/N) Enable SSH (Y/N) Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y

Similarly you will install the management Group ESXI Servers as well and do the basic settings. for more information about how many management ESXi host required for cloud, please visit my Cloud Lab Setup/Scenario post.

4-Other useful information for ESXi Server (optional)

Following are the configuration which you may need know for your knowledge.

  1. How to restore Network settings of ESXi 
  2. How to Set/change Root password

How to restore Network settings of ESXi 

From main configuration Screen, Select “Network Restore options”, press Enter


Option 1: Restore All Host Network Configuration to its default

Option 2: Restore Standard Switch setting, it will restore to default Standard Switch Network settings.

For First two option, select any one and press “Enter”, Choose “F11” to Agree, “ESC” to move back to previous screen.


NOTE:please read the associated instructions when any of your selected setting carefully before proceed.

Option 3:if you choose Restore vDS (its bit tricky), Select and Press Enter.

In vDS restore you will find three settings.

  • Restore default blocked setting to Unblocked

(Press Space for Selection and Press “F11”) to agree for proceeding.


  • Restore vDS uplinks settings, press Enter on the option


Select the specific uplink (press space to select), it will restore that uplink settings to default. Press “Enter”


Press ESC to move back the previous screen.

  •  Restore vDS VLAN settings.

Enter the valid VLAN ID which wan to restore to default. Press “F11” to proceed.


How to Set/change Root password 

On Main configuration scree, select “Configure password”, Please Enter


Provide the Old and New password, press “Enter”
