Cloud Lab-37: vCloud Director Foundation- “Organization Catalog and User Rights Configuration”

This is the last post of my vCloud Director Foundation part. lets just recall, what we have covered so far in vCloud Director foundations.

Today, i am moving forward to start creating catalogs for vCloud Director Organizations and also assign user rights to the each organization which i have created in my earlier post vCloud Director Foundation- “Organizations Configuration”

LAB-37 TASKS

In this Lab we will perform following tasks

  1. Add catalogs to the Organizations.
  2. Rights Management of Organizations
  3. Share Catalogs to other Organizations.

1-Add catalogs to the Organizations.

if you don’t know,What is the purpose of Catalog in an vCloud Director Organization. you should read my post “Cloud Resources and Logical Design”

 Catalog for Organization “HITECH”

Go to “vCloud director” home screen-> in “quick start” menu -> Click on option 7th “Add Catalog to an organization”

Click on the organization “HITech” to create an organization catalog-> Click “Next”

Enter the Catalog Name “HITech-Catalog” -> Click “Next”

If  you have multiple storage available for an organization. Then you have possibility to select a predefined datastore for catalog provisioning.

In this case, I choosed the 2nd Option “Pre-Provision on Specific Storage Policy” and select a datastore policy “Bronze” -> Click “Next”

On ready to complete page ,Review the first Organization catalog configuration summary -> Click “Finish”

Catalog for Organization “SkyNet”

Go to “vCloud director” home screen-> in “quick start” menu -> Click on option 7th “Add Catalog to an organization”

This time select “SkyNet” organization -> Click “Next”

Enter catalog name “SkyNet-Catalog” -> Click “Next”

This time i have choosed “default option” to choose any storage for catalog provisioning -> Click “Next”

Leave as default -> Click “Next”

On ready to complete page ,Review the second Organization catalog configuration summary -> Click “Finish”

Now, i have created the catalogs for both of our organizations.

2-Right Management of Organizations

User Role Assignment for Organization “SkyNet”

To assign rights to an organization ->Go to the organization “SkyNet” -> Administration -> Users ->click on “Import Users” (highlighted Icon)

Search “skynet” keyword. As you can see we find two users

NOTE: these are active directory users/groups. which we created earlier and then bind our cloud Organization with that OU of active directory using LDAP.

Now Select “sysnetuser1” -> Click “Add”-> Assign role “vApp User”

You can verify the newly added users in users tab of an Organization.

Now add “skynetadmin” group as an “Organization administrator” -> Click ”Ok”

You can verify the both SkyNet Organization users with their respective rights as shown below.

Test the Rights

You can test the rights by login to each user on “SkyNet” organization at following vCloud Director Organization URL https://vcloud.vmlab.com/cloud/org/SkyNet

User Role Assignment for Organization “HITECH”

Repeat the same steps as i did in SkyNet Organization to add rights on “HITECH Corporation” Organization

After the rights configuration at “HITech” organization, his users section should looks like as shown below.

Test the Rights

You can test the rights by login to each user on “HITech” organization at following vCloud Director Organization URL https://vcloud.vmlab.com/cloud/org/HITech

3-Share Catalogs to other Organizations

if you don’t know,What is the purpose of to Share Catalogs between two vCloud Director Organizations. you should read my post “Cloud Resources and Logical Design”

For sake of example, I am going to share “SkyNet Corporation”  Organization Catalog “SkyNet-Catalog” with “HITech Organization”

Log in to SkyNet Organization-> In “Catalogs” Tab-> Right Click On the “Catalog” which you want to share -> Click “Share”

Click On “Add Organization” Button

Select “Specific Organization” option-> Click “Add” Organization in my case it is “HITech” -> Click “OK”

“HITech”  Organization is now added for Sharing -> Click “OK”

You can also verify the “SkyNet-Catalog” Share Status as highlighted.

Test Catalog Sharing

Login in to “HITech” Organization Using HITech vCloud Director Organization URL https://vcloud.vmlab.com/cloud/org/hitech

Enter “hitechadmin”  user Credentials ,from vCloud Director Organization “home Screen” -> Click “Catalog” -> Select “Pubic Catalogs”

As you can see “SkyNet-Catalog” is now available to “HITech” Organization.
